Zambezi Giraffe Project Progress Report February 2017 to October 2017

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) are one of the most loved and iconic megafauna in Africa, but their conservation status is currently of great concern, with a 2015 IUCN assessment listing the species as vulnerable to extinction. Furthermore, a recent study suggested that the one currently recognised giraffe species should be separated into 4 distinct species, meaning that giraffe populations may be at even greater risk than previously thought. The African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) began giraffe research in the

Long-term population dynamics of African ungulates in Waterberg Plateau National Park, Namibia

The current study was undertaken to determine long-term population trends (33 years) of ungulate species in the Waterberg National Park (WNP), Namibia, using aerial and waterhole counts of ungulates during the years 1980−2013.We tried to establish how rainfall influences the multi-species population dynamics. During this period sixteen ungulates species were recorded. Among these, eight have shown an increase in numbers during the years 1984−2013, six other decreased, and populations of two other species remained stable. Roan and sable antelope, kudu

Trends in populations of elephant and other large herbivores in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe, as revealed by sample aerial surveys

For 30 years, regular aerial surveys in Zimbabwean protected areas were funded, designed and executed primarily to estimate elephant numbers. Other large herbivores were recorded, even though some species were not easily seen from the air in savannah woodlands. Population estimates for species other than elephant provided indices of abundance that could be used to determine temporal trends in population size. This study tests for significant trends in the abundance of large herbivores in Gonarezhou National Park, assuming that data
