Giraffe birth locations in the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia: site fidelity or microhabitat selection?

Birth site location can have enormous implications for female reproductive success. Some ungulate species demonstrate consistent birth site fidelity, while others shift birth locations during their lifetimes as a function of ecological and social factors. Food Selection by Transvaal lowveld giraffe as determined by analysis of stomach contents

Food selection by giraffe in the Transvaal lowveld was studied by identifying plant fragments from stomach contents over a 1 year period. Large fragments were randomly taken from the material while small fragments were taken from a 50 ml sample. Identifications were based on diagnostic keys and over 8000 fragments were classified. Food habits of giraffe in Tsavo National Park, Kenya

In the context of a broader ecological investigation, food habits of giraffe were studied in Tsavo National Park (East). The only method employed was direct observation of feeding animals in the field. The reaction of a group of Rothschild’s giraffe to a new environment

The behaviour of a translocated group of 11 Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi Lydekker) was studied for 9 weeks in 1968. A comparison was made between their new and former habitats, the food plants eaten in both places, and behaviour. For 3.5 months after release, they appeared to have settled in the area, but they suddenly started extending their range. Possible reasons are suggested for their failure to stay in the release area and their eventual disappearance.
